“Lee is a very smart, technically gifted and strong manager. He will definitely make some achievements.” Wu Canwei said.
Young and ambitious, Lee faced his first major setback in Huawei. Around the year 2000, Lee's position underwent adjustments, serving as Huawei's electrical general manager and then head of the American Research Institute.
When Ren Zhengfei advocated for "internal entrepreneurship," Lee seemed discontent and left after some time. His departure was accepted by Ren Zhengfei eventually.
A batch of Huawei people followed him out to form Harbor Network, which seemed to have an emotional tone: everywhere not allowing Huawei to feel good, becoming its most promising competitor. Evidently it showcased Li's talents.
But Ren Zhengfei was old-fashioned in his strategy. In 2006, Huawei imitated Cisco by acquiring Harbor Network; Li returned to Huawei as chief scientist for telecommunications science and vice president. By the end of 2007, he became deputy president of Huawei Terminal Company with internal rankings outside the top ten.
Li sank into depression again. A colleague who worked with Li during this period shared that at the grassroots level engineers regarded Li as "a godly figure" with many admirers.
However "the second return" meant that Li rarely appeared within the company anymore (Inspiration Life www.lz13.cn). Liu Sijia expressed that while Li could be a technical spirit leader in R&D systems but less effective in other systems like marketing sales due to Huaweis' powerful marketing system., Wujian said: The competitive relationship had not been handled properly before; therefore leaving twice also came naturally.
Two years later, he indeed chose to leave once more - going to Baidu where he became CTO but only stayed for about a year before departing again from Baidu too late last month! It seems that during his time at Baidu he grew much matured than before!
According to a veteran media person familiar with communication industry developments regarding what happened during this period at Baidu:
"One day there was an error at Baidu when everyone received an email from Lee Yiman taking full responsibility himself on behalf of all employees - his words were sincere giving people deep impression."
In retrospect,
"Although I didn't work directly under him," another former colleague recalled,"but I can tell you one thing -he is still very charming even now...He has got lots of fans here."
However despite being talented & well-liked,
"But given how things are now at China Mobile [his current employer], it would be difficult for him [to stay long]. The relationship between them is complicated." A source close to both parties told us recently
Sure enough just over a year later,
he resigned from China Mobile amid rumors surrounding corruption investigations involving senior executives there.
As one observer noted: "It looks like he might have timed it badly...it makes you wonder..."
Having navigated through various companies including those mentioned above,
this legendary career manager who once shone brightly & continues doing so today returns back alone – perhaps creating new dreams amidst internet age?
